Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate one of the most noticeable rhetorical usages which is often found in Shakespeare’s works, i.e.‘ repetition’. In this paper, we handle Shakespeare’s Macbeth (MAC) as our corpus, where we can discover as many repetitive examples as in the other works we have researched. But not only the repeated words or phrases, we can also find another different factor when we read or hear the lines of the witches. These lines are written by ‘trochaic tetrameter’, which seems to give us some special feeling of the witches’ world, because of its unique rhythm with the initial strong accents and the following weak ones. So we will examine when and how these meters are used, and what effect they give us, as well as analyzing the repetitive usages.
