本稿は冷戦の終結後の最初10 年の日米関係における主要な変化と発展を検証する。具体的には、 1 ）米軍の東アジアからの削減あるいは撤退の可能性への日本側における懸念、他方で、米国が関与する可能性がある地域紛争、例えば、朝鮮半島と台湾海峡、に巻き込まれること（エンタングルメント）への日本側の懸念、　２）米日安全保障関係の強化における「再定義」か「再確認」の問題、そして3 ）米国と日本の相互協力および安全保障条約の2 つの主要な役割、すなわち、日本の防衛と東アジアの安定の維持、の三大側面を考察する。 This paper examines the major changes and developments in the U.S.-Japan security relations during the first decade after the end of the Cold War in terms of the following major aspects: 1) Japan’s concern about the reduction of U.S. troops or military withdrawal of the U.S. from East Asia, and the subsequent reverse concern about possible Japanese “entanglement” in regional conflicts in which the U.S. is involved, in such major areas as the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan Strait; 2) the question of “re-definition” or “reaffirmation” regarding the strengthening of U.S.-Japan security arrangements; and 3) the inter-relationship between the two major roles of the U.S.-Japan Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty: the defense of Japan and the maintenance of stability in East Asia.
