Pina, a hand-woven textile made from pineapple leaf fiber from the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, is one of the few such products surviving in the twenty-first century. The manufacture of this special fabric was in danger of dying out in the 1980s due to scarcity of product and high retail cost, but was miraculously revived by the efforts of concerned individuals. This paper examines the contributions of three such people: a researcher and author, a fashion designer, and a manufacturer. By taking a detailed look at their activities, we can shed light on possible future moves in the industry and the unique nature of Philippine colonial culture.
