Recent years have seen the emergence of leftist governments in not a few countries in Latin America. This paper focuses on the background of the developments and sustainability of the economic policies of those governments.The first section tries to analyze the background of the emergence of leftist governments in Latin America from the view point of resistance against the economic globalization propelled by the United States, IMF and the World Bank, and lucky opportunity of the price appreciation of natural resources.The second section examines the Bolivian case: one of the most marginalized country from the globalization trend except hydrocarbon gas trade. Bolivia has also attracted international attention by the newly elected president who is a descendent of native inhabitants and has had radical political movements.The third section studies the sustainability of the new government of Bolivia by taking up the several important issues, such as "nationalization" of natural gas, cocaine policy and the diversification of export industries.In the fourth section taken-up issue is on the approach of economic integration of the leftist governments in the Latin American countries, including Agreement for a Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, energy cooperation in the region, non-dollarization in Bolivia and so on.Lastly concluding remark is given.
