Abstract

Relative comparisons between close friends, and also acquaintances in everyday life were examined.Ninety-seven students answered the questionnaire using the spontaneous trait generation task by Deutsh and Mackecy(1985), and Deutsh, Sullivan, Sage, and Basil(1991). The scores of relative comparison between close friends were greater than those between acquaintances. This result was consistent with former studies'. Also it was interpreted as that the close friend who was chosen by an individual spontaneously, had an important role on reorganization of cognitive schema and identity formation in adolescence. Furthermore, the method of the task was discussed.
