本稿の目的は、「心を澄ます」というテーマで、天理教およびインドの宗教を取り上げ、「心を澄ます」ことの意味構造を宗教学の視点から考察することにある。宗教伝統においては、さまざまな宗教的実践が強調されてきたが、実践的行為は救いあるいは悟りの手段という実在認識的な意義をもつ。その究極的目標に到達するためには、「心を澄ます」ことが不可欠である。澄んだ心には、生の深みが次第に拓けるからである。宗教の意味世界では、心と現実（リアリティ）は対応した多層的構造をなしている。「心を澄ます」ことによって、心の深層が開かれて、現実の深みが理解される。諸宗教の伝統では、自己の身体あるいは存在のリアリティが心の深層から、心を澄まして捉えなおされるとき、たとえそれがそれまでと同じリアリティであったとしても、全く違った意味をもつものとして理解される。存在世界の風景は一変し、新たな意味世界、すなわち生の根源的事実性への地平が拓けていく。

With the "purification of the mind" as the theme, this paper discusses Tenrikyo and Indian religious traditions to examine the semantic structure of the "purification of the mind" from the perspective of religious studies. Religious practice, which has been emphasized by religious traditions, has the significance of deepening the recognition of reality as the means to salvation or enlightenment. Reaching its ultimate goal requires the "purification of the mind" because the depth of life gradually unfolds to a purified mind. In the semantic realm of religion, the mind and reality form corresponding multi-layered structures. The "purification of the mind" opens up the deep layers of the mind and brings about an understanding of the depth of reality. According to various religious traditions, when the reality of one's own body or existence is seen from the depth of the mind through its purification, it is understood to have totally different meaning though it may be the same reality as before. This transforms the landscape of the existing world and opens the horizon of a new semantic world or the fundamental actuality of life.
