Lake Biwako, the greatest lake in Japan, constituts of twa pars, one of which is themain baison(Hokko)and the other of which is the subsidiary baison(Nanko). The depths of the overlying water range up to 103 m in Hokko and up to 8 m in Nanko. Nanko supplies about 150 million peaple with drinking water. The sediment cores provide a historical records of events occurring in the watershed of the lake and enable a reasonable estimation to be made of the natural background level and the change in input of heavy metals over an extended period of time. This approach is particularly useful in Nanko, since it is known that the rate of sedimentation in Nanko is about 1 mm per year by Pb 210 dating technique. Using the upper part and the deeper part of fifty cores taken with a normal gravitycoring equipment, the distribution modes of manganese, zinc, cadmium, mercury and lead in the surface sediments at present time and at about four hundred years ago were made clear; and the natural background level and the rate of accumulation of those heavy metals due to man's activities were estimated as the following two tables.
