A new method of measuring colors of minerals, which uses a personal computer and a scanner, hasbeen developed in order to obtain international color parameters L*, a* and b*. The two types of datawere compared for 115 colors of the Mansell color chart : one type is of data obtained by the above newmethod and another type is of data obtained by a colorimeter. A good correlation is found between thetypes of data on the a*-b* diagram, which is fitted by a straight line. For mineralogical and geologicalapplications, colors of an alkali feldspar grain in the G48 granite specimen were measured by the scannermethod newly developed. The data are converted as the corrected values using the correlationdhipbetween the above two types of data for the 50 Mussel colors selected as reddish colors from the 115Munsell colors. The two fitting straight lines for the two types of data are approximately parallel in spiteof the difference of the locations of the lines. In addition, the color data obtained for the G48 alkali feldsparby a portable spectrometer and a micro spectrometer were also plotted on the a*-b* diagram. The slopesof these two fitting lines are also consistent with the above two lines. These four variation lines on thea*-b* diagram are comprehensively consistent with the variation trend of red colors caused by thechange of hematite content in alpha-alumina powder that was already clarified. This study shows thatthe newly developed method described here can be applied for the color measurement of minerals,especially reddish alkali feldspars, suggesting that the red color of alkali feldspar grains in the G48 granite is due to the presence of hematite micrograins.
