Abstract

This paper aims to analyze how the relics of saints were obtained and used by the Church and the government in the Tuscan city-states in central Italy. I took up the case of the cathedral of Pistoia from the fifth to the fourteenth century and examined the transition of its titulus, the altars dedicated to saints and the translatio of the relics by analyzing the related documentations. In particular, I noted the relic of St. James the Great, the most important relic in the cathedral: I discussed the purpose for which St. Atto, the bishop of Pistoia, requested the archbishop of Compostela, Diego Gelmirez, to donate this relic in the early twelfth century, and the process involved therein. In Pistoia during this period, the bishop's privileges were threatened by the rise of an autonomous government and the relationship between the government officials (consoli) and the bishop deteriorated. It seems, therefore, that the Bishop Atto strived to acquire this relic to improve this strained relationship. During the development of the city-states, the intricate political relationship between the Church and the government was reflected in the collection of relics.
