抄録

The main purpose of this paper is to trail the history of the electoral system in Japan. That is to say, it is explained in this paper how the American electoral system had a great influence on the Japanese electoral system. It ascends to the middle of the 19th century. One of the key persons in this field is NAKAHAMA Manjiro, who drifted 1841 in a ship, and was fortunately saved by an American whaling ship. NAKAHAMA who had been taught in United States and could return to Japan 1851 brought various knowledge which included the American electoral system. Basing on such a historical background, the Japanese electoral system has developed, although slowly.
