1. Alumina gel containing small amounts of platinum was exarnined to improve excellently both the optimum space velocity and the space time yield in the hydrogen cyanide manufacturing process from ammonia and methane. 2. With alumina gel containing 1.3% of platinum black, the space time yield up to about 4 kg HCN/L. hr or higher was obtained; the temperature of catalyst being 950℃. This figure on the space time yield has an extraordinarily superior value in the ammonia-methane process and is comparable to the space time yield in the ammonia-methane-oxygen process (Andrussow process). 3. It was confirmed that alumina gel containing even 1.3% of platinum would be sufficiently be active to be employed in practice, improving the defects on the space time yield in the ammonia-methane process.
