Abstract:Results of interviews with Korean women who married Japanese men through matchmaking brokers and migrated to Japan, reveals certain types of women, for example women raised in poor families such as single-mother homes, women over marriageable age, and divorced women with children. They have been pushed from Korean society by gender, social and cultural factors. Gender factors are the low status of women in their families and their workplaces, and the emphasis on women's age and appearance in choosing their partners. Social factors are the undeveloped social security system including the pension system and social welfare, and the impoverishment of women, especially single-mothers. Cultural factors include high marriage expenses caused by the feelings towards marriage within families, and widespread and accessible matchmaking brokers. In addition, personal problems such as being crime victims, involved in bad relationships, or company bankruptcies, trigger Korean women to marry Japanese and emigrate to Japan.
