Today the Global Positioning System (GPS) is the most developed and widely used source for position, navigation and timing. Our global society relies heavily on the civilian GPS signal in transportation systems, communication networks, emergency services, and energy distribution by using precise location information and time synchronization. Unfortunately, the civilian GPS signal was not designed for such purpose at first, and its vulnerability to radio wave interference, jamming and spoofing is a growing concern. Among all the possible sources of intentional interference, spoofing is extremely deceptive and sinister. In fact, the victim receiver may not be able to warn the user and discern between authentic and false signals. For this reason, a receiver featuring anti-spoofing capabilities might become a need in many cases. This paper provides a review of recent research in the field of GPS anti-spoofing on the receiver side. The vulnerability of GPS receivers to spoofing attacks is investigated, and the anti-spoofing algorithms in the baseband signal and the application layers are discussed.
