Abstract

This study demonstrated the effects of the trend toward part-time farming in changes of farmers' decisions on crop options by a comparison between 2003 and 2009 in a case study of Bac Son commune, Soc Son, Ha Noi, where people are able to commute to outside jobs and which is also the main production area of agricultural products for the city. Concretely, (1) Farm households have been tending to become part-time households from 2003 to 2009 in Bac Son commune. (2) Farm households have decreased their labor intensive crops such as rice, litchi and tea, and while on the other hand increasing extensive crops such as corn, banana, jack fruit, and fish culture in order to generate working time for out-side jobs. As a result, their agriculture production has become labor extensive. Moreover, farm households' sales revenue has been decreasing due to the decrease of commercial crops such as litchi and tea, and crops of low labor productivity like pomelo, fattening pig, and poultry. (3) Farm households emphasized food self-supply both in 2003 and 2009. Therefore, farm households have kept their food self-supply both in amounts of quantity and money even while the trend has been moving toward part-time farming.
