本稿では，英語の疑似受動文の適格性の相違を説明する機能論的制約，とくに，Takami（1992）で提案された「特徴づけ」（characterization）という概念に基づく制約を取り上げ，その言語学的妥当性を検討する。さらに，「特徴づけ」による制約とKuno（1983，1988）で提案された英語の受動文に関する意味的制約の関係を見たうえで，機能文法における前者の位置付けとその問題点を明らかにする。

The purpose of this study is to investigate the adequacy of Characterization Condition proposed in Takami (1992) from both syntactic and functional point of view. Although there still remain a few defects in his definition of Characertization, we have concluded that Characterization Coundition has succeeded in capturing the generalization of pseudo-passives in English.
