The purpose of this study is to investigate the understanding of three uses of the present perfect tense. A total of 24 sentences of the present perfect tense were given to 1st year college students who were required to translate the meaning to Japanese. The results showed that one use was relatively easier to understand compared to other two uses. Furthermore, there were significant findings from analyzing the data from 24 translated sentences. Additionally, there were other important factors that students need to learn prior to learning present perfect tense such as vocabulary meaning, conjugation of verbs, and the relationship between verbs and adverbial phrases.
