Sojourner Acculturation Attitudes : Suggestions for Learner Motivation in Second Language Acquisition (SLA)

Search this article

Description

This paper considers how understanding of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) motivation can be enhanced through inclusion of an emergent approach to sojourner acculturation and intercultural interaction. A model is presented, the Intercultural Contact Model (Culhane, 2001a), which depicts interaction patterns among SLA sojourners; the model is considered to offer an analogous approach for learner motivation in SLA. Discussion of research into motivation in SLA and Acculturation Attitudes is presented as an overview to provide a background to a new construct introduced in the paper: Contact Motivation. A brief review of three research efforts aimed at evaluating the efficacy of this construct is made, prior to consideration of what these theories can offer to motivation research in SLA.
