Description

After some studies and research on so-called "shirasu" widely exists in Kagoshima Prefecture, we now have both an opinion and some doubts about its property. That is, the "shirasu" is probably not mere soil but some rock-like or light concrete-like body with some bond. Because, though it is light and has much void, and yet it stands upright so high as it is rather diffcult to elucidate the fenomenon by soil mechanies. While some specialists of soil engineering have another opinion that it is also a kind of soil and can solve the fall of a "shirasu" cliff by soil mechanics. The different view between we and them appears to lead to an argument about the original properties of the "shirasu" in the learned circles. A few soil engineers are of the same opinion with us, many geologists almost agree to our view. This paper relates the circumstances above mentioned and show our ways of thinking and the reason why we regard the "shirasu" as some combined body.
