Abstract

This article attempts to account for sentences including a quote which is located in sentence-initial position, which is called “quotative construction” (QC). Among them, a sentence with subject-verb inversion is called “quotative inversion” (QI). The surface structure of QI is similar to that of locative inversion constructions. Therefore, QI has been given analyses similar to those of locative inversion: post-verbal subject DPs of these two types of inversion constructions remain in their base-generated position. On the other hand, this paper claims that subject DPs in QI do not stay in situ but move to [Spec, TP] as in ordinary sentences. It is also assumed that the quote is not an argument selected by the main verb, but an adjunct modifying the main verb, contrary to the arguments in previous studies. As for verbs in QC, this paper makes an assumption that they are present in order just to complement an action of communication because of the semantic reduction caused by the presence of the quote. As an alternative analysis of QI, this paper proposes a license condition on QC that the proper modification relation between the quote and the verb must be established within a single transferred domain along the lines of Tanaka (2011). It is shown that this proposal can account for the derivations of QC. Furthermore, some properties of QC receive a principled explanation under the analysis proposed here.
