Description

Since trees are frequently irregular in cross section, a high degree of precision in measuring their diameters is impossible. Mainly the irregularity of the cross section is due to elliptical growth (eccentric growth). It is reported that trees are generally ellipse in cross section and that the major axis of cross section lies as a rule to the direction of main wind. Author confirmed by measuring diameters of Pinus densiflora growing in level lands that the view was proper. It is reported that the major axis of cross section of trees growing in inclined lands lies to the direction of slope. But in Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cryptomeria japonica used by author the major axis of cross section not always lied to the direction of slope.
