On South Korea's southernmost island called Jeju live women who collect marine products in the sea without the use of any equipment. They are called the Haenyeo. As a result of longstanding efforts, the culture of the Jeju Haenyeo was registered on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on November 30, 2016. However, the Haenyeo are aging as a population and are increasingly lacking in successors who can carry their traditions and lifestyle forward into the future. This research initiative attempts to delve into one of the causes of this problem by examining the image of the Haenyeo from the perspective of the outsider. In particular, the paper investigates the image of the Haenyeo from a male-centered or patriarchal perspective.
