This short article presents and analyzes the basic views of the English language that students at Bunkyo University, Koshigaya, have. About 60% of 511 students, whom the author has taught in English as a second language classes since 1991, answer that they like "English"; however, about 85% of the responder students mention that they are not good at the language even if they like it. According to what they mention, it does not seem that they recognize English as a "language." Also revealed by this essay is one important problem that not only students but also teachers are often lacking in their motivation to learn the English language.
