Abstract
Lafcadio Hearn's 'The Reconciliation' is based on a story in Konjaku Monogatari-shu, a miscellany of early 12th-century Japanese short stories. Setsu Koizumi, his wife, read and explained to him a story from the miscellany published by Tsujimoto Shoko-do. I have closely collated the story with another version of the story published by Iwanami Shoten. I have also shown how Hearn's 'The Reconciliation' is related to the original story published by Tsujimoto Shoko-do with occasional references to Iwanami Shoten's version, if necessary. In doing so, I have tried to expose the following points. Concerning the two versions of the original story in Konjaku Monogatari-shu, it is quite difficult to regard them as a narrative for heroine's revenge on her unfaithful husband. Authors of the two versions of the story, however, have paid no attention to whether their works could be construed as a revenge or not. However, I have asserted that Hearn wrote his 'The Reconciliation' to celebrate an ideal state of conjugal love from a Westerner's viewpoint.
