説明

Modern distribution of Coccolithus pelagicus (WALLICH) SCHILLER is confined to both polar cold water systems in the world. But its ancient development was spread all over the world ocean. Some geologists think still that Coccolithus pelagicus is a typical cold water facies species. Their recognition on this problem shoud be corrected for the exact development of earth science. The points of argument are summarized as follows ; Are modern and fossil Coccolithus pelagicus a same taxon? Was the surface temperature of low-latitude area down to under 15℃ in late Pliocene time? Did Coccolithus pelagicus restrict of its habitat to coldwater system in Pleistocene time from its original eurythermal adaptation? The writer showed its Pliocene distribution and Pleistocene declination in tropical and subtropical regions. Moreover, morphological deferences of both modern and fossil forms were presented in aid of a scanning electron microscope. Based upon the above data the writer had an inference that fossil Coccolithus pelagicus and modern Coccolithus pelagicus should not be included to a taxon. Namely fossil Coccolithus pelagicus had disappeared at the end of Pliocene in tropical region and its extinction delayed to late Pleistocene in mid-latitude area of western Pacific. And modern Coccolithus pelagicus probably appeared at the middle time of Pleistocene in cold water area. This scheme gives us a resonable explanation on Coccolithus pelagicus problem.
