Abstract

The present study examined how emotion aroused by odor cues affects autobiographical remembering. In experiment 1, twenty-five participants completed the memory characteristics questionnaire (MCQ; Johnson, Foley, Suengas, & Ray, 1988) after remembering memories cued by odors with either a high or low level of affective arousal. Results showed that the recall of retrospective recollection and time information elements was better for memories cued by an odor with a high level of affective arousal than for memories cued by a low one. In experiment 2, thirty-seven participants completed the MCQ after remembering memories cued by a positive odor or a negative one. Results showed that the recall of clarity, time information elements, overall impression, spatial information, and event before and after was better for memories cued by a positive odor than for memories cued by a negative one. These findings suggest that emotion plays a significant role in odor-cued autobiographical remembering.
