In 2004, all higher education organizations in Japan were required to undergo certified evaluation and accreditation, with an emphasis on quality assurance and improvement of education and research activities in universities. Niigata University carried out NIAD-UE's (National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation's) institutional certified evaluation and accreditation in 2007, and was recognized as having met the standards for universities at the institutional level. In completing the self-assessment report, various problems at our university were clarified. In particular, it can be said that the experience of arranging the situation of our university from and institutional viewpoint was extremely significant in considering future improvements and developments. As strict standards of quality assurance and improvement and enhancement in quality will be required of each university in the future, many issues remained to be solved at our university. This report describes several problems obtained through institutional certified evaluation and accreditation of Niigata University. We consider that clarifying and addressing these issues will allow us to obtain maximal benefits from the evaluation and meet the requirements for higher education in Japan.
