No research has yet been conducted on the comparison between existential verbs in the Taiwan Minnan language and the Japanese language, even though these two languages show much similarity at the semantic and pragmatic level. The focus of this research is the comparison of the existential verbs ū -V in Taiwan Minnan and the V-tearu in Japanese and the exploration of the aspects and modalities in these existential constructions. This research uses material from two language databases that are coeval and analyzes the similarities and differences in their process of grammaticalization.
