Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse what students learned from psychiatric nursing practice at community-based institutions in order to obtain materials to improve our teaching. Records from 84 students were examined, 184 record units were extracted and 5 core-categories of students' learning (<Nursing function on clients' social participation> <Interaction between nurses and clients> <Nursing function on controlling psychiatric condition> <Nursing function on environment for clients> <Nursing function on living life skills for clients>) were composed. Through practice at community based institutions, students interacted with people with mental illness who were living in a community and learned the importance of providing nursing that is aiming for their rehabilitation. This method of practice gave an opportunity for students to gain wider perspective psychiatric nursing, such as for individual and society as a whole.
