Abstract

Departmental Bulletin Paper

Oxymoron is a figure of speech which combines two contradictory or incongruous words in encoded meaning, such as‘a true lie,’ Isogaba maware (More haste, less speed.), and Chiisana kyojin (Little big man).\nSuch expressions are semantically incompatible, but the hearer can interpret what the speaker intends to communicate. In this paper, we will be concerned with oxymoron based on the Relevance Theory developed by Sperber and Wilson (1986/1995), and explain how the inferential processes of recovering the explicit content of the utterance, such as ad hoc concepts construction and saturation contribute to the interpretation of this figure of speech.
