Description
John Evelyn / "A Character of England"
John Evelyn anonymously published one of his tracts "A Character of England" in 1659. It is supposedly a letter by a French traveler depicting his true impressions and experiences during a visit to England. A great deal of English customs and manners are criticized as vulgar and morose; the buildings and the environment of London, disastrous. Since Evelyn was writing from a royalist's point of view, he tried to conceal his authorship under the Cromwell's reign, and by doing so he succeeded in pointing out boldly to the public what was missing in his contemporary England. Closely related to his Diary, "Character" voices Evelyn's own opinions and those proposals, which he later made in public. One of the two main purposes of this study is to indicate the fact that this minor tract contains several important factors which would become cores of his future pieces of work, such as "Fumifugium, " "Tyrannus, " and "Londinium Redivivum." The other purpose is to reveal Evelyn's strong belief that the reconstruction of the English cultural life and the recovery of its splendor would be brought about with the return of the monarchy.
