Abstract

This paper will show the outline of a new Cantonese romanization scheme designed by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong ,1993. There are many romanization systems of Cantonese in the world, but there is no national standard system now. LSHK's new scheme aims to correct the inconsistencies, and to be a useful standard system for information technology, education , linguistic studies, etc. One of the most remarkeable features of this scheme is it uses the Roman alphabet without using any diacritical marks because they want to use this scheme on a computer. Therefore the letters available are limited to the standerd ASCII codes. In Japan, there is another useful Cantonese romanization scheme for Japanese students. This systems, which was designed by Professor Chishima Eiichi at Reitaku University as a leaning aid, is being used on Chinese radio programs broadcasted by NHK, In this paper I have tried to make clear the differences between these two romanization systems by comparing their marits for the users.
