説明

In this paper I investigate the political career of the Japanese Christian politician Niro IWAKAMI (1913-1989) by examining how Christian missions affected and assisted the development of his political thought and actions. Niro started his political career as the mayor of Uridura Town, and he later became the governor of Ibaraki Prefecture (1959-1975). He was converted by US Churches of Christ missionary O. D. Bixler (1896-1968), who became Iwakami's spiritual mentor who also provided some political assistance for Iwakami. Bixler was particularly helpful in accompanying Iwakami during his 1961 trip to the United States, in which Iwakami had to negotiate with various US officials regarding the handing over of a US Air Force base in Ibaraki prefecture. Another key Christian in Iwakami's life was Masaichi KIKUCHI (1907-1990), a local preacher and the founder of the Nazare-en Nursing Home complex. Kikuchi provided spiritual counsel, as well as assistance for Iwakami during his political campaign. I argue in this paper that a missionary network helped Iwakami greatly to develop his political career. Although an inferior view of missions existed in Iwakami's time, Iwakami developed a Christian political thought that could be interpreted as a way of applying the principle Missio Dei in prefectural politics.
