Abstract

Major activities of space infrared astronomy in Japan have been performed by using balloons and rockets. The observational instruments were mostly small and simple ones, but they resulted in pioneering works by selecting unique objectives, i. e. the near infrared balloon observations first revealed the inner structure of the Galaxy and the rocket observations provided the most reliable cosmic background radiation spectrum. As a natural extension of these activities, a small space project called IRTS (Infra-Red Telescope in Space) is under development expecting a launch in 1993 by using the Japanese free flyer SFU. A single dedicated mission is also under planning for the next step.
