Heliotron magnetic field is produced by an electric current in a series of pair coils wound around the discharge tube at regular intervals. The electric currents in the pair coils have the opposite directions and different intensities each other. The lines of force near the tube axis undulate without crossing the wall, while those near the tube wall cross the wall. Thus a high-temperature plasma produced by ohmic heating is expected to be confined in the central region of the field. Experiments were caried out in order to verify the spatial confinement of a plasma in this field. The plasma current was observed only within the central region whose diameter was about 3cm, and the plasma had a sharp boundary. Outside the region there was no current. These results suggest that the hot plasma is kept apart from the wall of the discharge tube in the Heliotron magnetic field.
