Abstract

This paper deals with the basic problems of visual signs. In Part I, comparisons are made between visual and auditory signs and between verbal and pictorial signs. The author observed that several types of visual displays and expressions are related to several representational stages and aspects of Marr's (1982) theory of human visual information processings. In Part II, notationality theory of Goodman's (1968) semiotics and Deacon's (1997) argument on the emergence of the symbolic reference are critically examined. Finally, the author tries to explicate the four mode of references - the denotation, connotation, exemplification and expression - in visual signs. In the appendix, Manga (Japanese story comics) expressions are analyzed as a fusion of verbal expressions and pictorial expressions.
