Description

The observations of tidal currents on the surface layer, as a part of the study on fluxion and diffusion in Sasebo Bay. were carried out for 14 days at 5 observational stations in the bay. In this paper, we report the results of observed currents and harmonic analyses. The fastest speed of the current was observed at St. 7, which was near the entrance of Hario-Seto, between Sasebo Bay and Omura Bay, but the slowest one was at St. 8, near the entrance of Haiki-Seto. The turns of tide nearly coincided with low and high waters at St. 6 at the entrance of this bay and St. 9 at the central part of it. However, at the other 3 stations they were behind low and high waters, especially at St. 7 where it was 3 hours behind. The excellent component current was M2 at all stations and the velocities were in proportion to observed currents. S2 was a secondary excellent component current at most stations, but the others were different from station to station. One of the constant currents flowed out from St. 7 to the entrance of this bay through St. 10, and the other small stream flowed from St. 9 to the east side of this bay. It is estimated that the small stream divides into northerly and southerly drifts, and the former flows out to Haiki-Seto by way of St. 8, and the latter turns clockwise and takes the way to the entrance of this bay.
