Environmental influence of salt or of the other neutral salts contained as impurities in it upon the growth of Vibrio sp. No. 10 and Micrococcus sp. No. 2 was studied. Maximum growth of both organisms occurs in ca. 1 mol sodium chloride containing media. Additions of small amount of magnesium salts were stimulatory for their growth in media containing 1.0 mol sodium chloride, while calcium chloride prevented the growth of two halophiles in the same media. Relatively a high concentration of sodium chloride is not an essential factor controlling the growth of these two halophiles. In a low sodium chloride medium where the halophiles failed to grow, Micrococcus sp. No. 2 could grow in environment of a high osmotic pressure with other salts or sugar.
