Abstract
This paper discusses the problem accompanying the use of life histories in the study of shamanism. The life histories of four shamanic practitioners of the Goto Islands are introduced. One narrative had been recorded previously by Sasaki Hiromiki of Komazawa University but it was also recorded by the author . The other three life histories are introduced from the author's own research. It becomes clear that narrative is dependent on the relationship between the narrator and the listener. In the case recorded by Sasaki and author are different from each other, because of the shaman took into consideration the viewpoint of the listener. That does not mean the narrative of the shaman is a fiction, because the story is told to persuade the listener, the story -teller changes the narrative to make it familiar to the listener.
