説明

Childcare supervisors play a role in supporting the ways of life of working parents or guardians by actually taking care of children placed in childcare after school. However, the national average of childcare supervisors’ years of continuous service is just three years, and this inability to continue working for long periods of time has been identified as a problem in recent years. On the other hand, the average years of continuous service of supervisors in the city of Nagasaki is approximately 7.5 years, much longer than the national average. This study looked at the issue of why childcare supervisors in the city of Nagasaki are able to work for relatively longer times by interviewing six supervisors who have worked in after-school childcare in Nagasaki for long periods. The study found that the continuity of service of a childcare supervisor is built on the two pillars of "the process of facing and overcoming critical moments" and "factors that increase supervisors’ motivation to continue working.” The subjects of this study were confirmed to have faced three types of critical moments: (1) those resulting from working conditions (such as low pay and excessive workloads), (2) those related to relationships with parents and guardians (such as differences of opinion on childcare), and (3) those resulting from caring for the children (such as being at a loss concerning ways of dealing with children). It also was learned from speaking with the six supervisors that the following three factors increase supervisors’ motivation to continue working: (1) relationships of trust with parents and guardians, (2) encouragement and a sense of mission from graduates, and (3) satisfaction with the job of supervisor.
