[Abstract] Performing on a piano can give us satisfaction and joy when we can play well. But the practice that is needed to reach that point consists mainly of continuous, steady tasks which also require a lot of time and patience. I have experienced many cases in which students have gained resistance or hatred toward playing the piano before they have overcome those tasks. But even during those periods, I have had many students who showed progress after performing a duo/four-handed performance at an annual piano recital once a year. When students perform a dual/four-hand performance, often they will have improved their skills by adding synergy to their general practice. While a classical solo piano piece requires slow and steady effort in practice, a duo/fourhanded piece is often less difficult. Also, it requires less burden for each person to practice. But because it will be performed by two people, those melodies can turn into a significant piece, and they are even easy, students can experience a rich harmony of piano music, as well as the joy of performing with one another. As a result, such a process can lead students to feel that playing the piano is fun and encourage them to continue playing the piano. It will not only motivate them to practice more in general, but also the solo piece that they are practicing will also be favorably affected by it. And it will effectively improve their overall musical skills. Based on those experiences, and by looking back on my past 34 years of teaching piano, I will talk about the importance of duo/four-handed performances.
