Abstract

The aim of this paper is to compare the use of the expanded form, ie. the combination of be and the present participle, in the St. Luke's Gospel in King James Bible (KJB), Rheimes‐Douay Bible, Challoner revision (RDB), and World English Bible (WEB). The expanded form appears 100 times in the Gospel in the WEB. We collate the passages of the 100 cases with the corresponing ones of the KJB and the RDB, and to reconsider the usage of the simple form and the expanded form in the Early Modern English period, which is called "a transitional period" in the development of the combination.
