The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dialogue on the autonomic nervous system (dialogue system) in elderly people with dementia. The subjects were 14 aged people with dementia staying in the “A” nursing institution (The average age: 89.43±3.98; 2 males and 12 females; average Hasegawa’s Dementia Scale-R score: 11.79±4.37). Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, salivary amylase, body temperature, and pulse oxygen saturation were measured before and after dialogue system. Heart rate variability was measured throughout the experiment. No changes were observed in any of the measures. However, 9 subjects’ salivary amylase activity decreased after the dialogue system. The low frequency (LF)/ high frequency (HF) ratio increased during the dialogue system and decreased after the dialogue system in 4 subjects. Five subjects’ had HF ratios as parasympathetic nerve function during the dialogue system. It was suggested that salivary amylase activity and LF/HF could be useful to assess the effectiveness of the dialogue system in elderly people with dementia. Moreover, it was suggested that to implement an effective dialogue system during the daytime might be a useful way to induce normal autonomic nervous activity.
