Abstract

Nursing as caring is a relatively new concept in understanding nursing and its practice. The focus of nursing is nurturing the wholeness of person and environment through caring. Nursing is a discipline and a practice profession. All nursing takes place in nursing situations. These are shared lived experiences in which the caring between nurse and nursed enhances personhood. While occasions of nursing situations continue, the fact remains that various descriptions of nursing exist, including definitions of nursing situations that require clarification for practical uses. Tenets of this understanding include the concepts of human beings as whole and complete in the moment, of nursing transpiring in nursing situations, and of nursing as a discipline of knowledge and a practice profession. The purpose of this article is to describe technological competency as expression of caring in nursing. This article addresses the concept of caring as integral to nursing, the practice of nursing as knowing and valuing persons as whole, the influences of advancing technologies in nursing and health care, and to appreciate the culture of technology in nursing.
