Abstract

This study aimed to articulate the concept of role models by comparison with several career formation supporters, especially mentors, and review their potential and effectiveness in career education. The results showed that role models are used to: demonstrate good practices in particular roles; serve as references; and have an influence on students' behaviors and decision-making. They differentiate from mentors by the relationship methods; while mentors often establish two-way/reciprocal relationships, role models often establish one-way relationships with individuals. Our findings underpinned that role models may be effective and efficient in career education. Nonetheless, it is necessary to choose appropriate role model candidates and facilitate students' empathetic attitudes toward them.
