Abstract

type:text

In order to determine how plasma protein findings of patients with diseases of the blood, diseases of the liver, infectious diseases, ancylostomiasis and malignant tumors differ from normal findings, 153 patients with various diseases were studied with emphasis on their relation with the clinical picture. Hypoalbuminemia was present in all the patients under study; patients with cirrhosis of the liver, infectious diseases and malignant tumors were characterized by marked hypoalbuminemia. Changes in the composition of the globulin fraction varied from disease to disease: changes in the composion of the globulin fraction were slight in patients with diseases of the blood, with a few exceptions; of patients with the disease of the liver, those with hepatitis showed an increase of a-and γ-globulins, while those with cirrhosis of the liver, like those with infectious diseases, showed a uniform and marked increase of γ-globulin; there were a slight increase of f-globulin and an increase of φ(Fibrinogen) in patients with ancylostomiasis; many of the patients with malignant tumors showed an increase of γ-globulin, though this phenomenon was not seen in all of them. It was shown that there were more or less definite patterns in the change of plasma protein findings in various diseases, and that they varied with the stage of a disease and conditions of a patient. This observation would show that plasma protein findings are of value not only for diagnostic purposes but also in determining the effects of a treatment and in forecasting probable results of patients.
