The teaching of Hiragana is one of the most important tasks for the first grade teachers. Learning to read and write in Hiragana is easier for Japanese children than English writing systems are for the first grade speakers of English. There are three reasons for this: 1) The present Hiragana writing system is based on modern Japanese sounds. 2) Each Hiragana letter represents a syllable in Japanese. And recognizing each syllable is easier than recognizing each phoneme. And the structure of Japanese syllable is simpler than that of other languages. Also, the number of Japanese syllables is much fewer than that of European languages such as English. 3) Each Hiragana corresponds simply with each Japanese sound. 0n the other hand, the correspondence of English spellings and English syllables is very complicated. Japanese children begin to read and write with various materials written in Hiragana in their daily lives. They acquire this ability much before their entrance to school. Therefore, first grade teachers need to support children's learning by helping them to make the best use of the experiences they have undergone in their lives prior to and outside school. The actual sequence of Hiragana to be learned should vary according to each child. The best way for the children to learn to write Hiragana at school is to begin with the Hiragana of their own names. 0ne of the most appropriate class activities for doing this is to have the children make and exchange visiting cards with each other on which they write their own names. Teachers should strive to create effective activities for learning, so-called "projects", in which children can do purposeful and communicative activities. Through the course of these activities, teachers should help each child learn Hiragana while paying individual attention to them.
