Surveys on the Peddlers of Agricultural Products in Japan. I. On the Vegetable Circulating Types by Peddlers in the City and Suburban Districts. M. YAMADA. Faculty of Horticulture, Chiba University, Matsudo, Japan. Tech. Bull. Fac. Hort. Chiba Univ. No.15: 83〜100, 1967. This survey was made to obtain economical data concerning the vegetable peddling, one of the types for circulating vegetables in the city and suburban districts. Hitherto, the vegetable peddling has been made to increase agricultural profits making use of the surplus labour in the farm managements. More recently, however, this condition has been altering into "forced" peddling, whether willing or not, because of the depression in the farm economy. It seems that the growing of many kinds of peddling crops by peddlers in a small scale gives a wide variety in the growing system of crops and techniques of peddling growers. If there is an excess of products which can not be peddled, the products of medium quality are shipped to the local morning markets and those of high quality to the central wholesale markets in the city. It was found that a peddler having approximately 40 customers in the city could peddle at least 20 customers in a day. The amounts of purchase by one customer is influenced by their living standards, and amounts of sales by peddlers are determined by the difference in degree of dependence of each grower on peddling, in other words, determined by the percentage of peddling to the farm economy of each grower. It is noted in this survey that the human relation between customers and peddlers is so close that their perpetual relations exist. However, it appears that the satisfactory development of peddling in the future will be hopeless, owing to the shortage of labour, higher costs of peddling, and few successors of agriculture in Japan.
