Abstract: Samuel Johnson’s Rambler 4 (Saturday, March 31, 1750) is about what he called ““"familiar histories,”" i.e. fictional works as distinct from romances. It is also characterized by his ethical concerns, drawing more attention to what fictional works should be than to what they are. This has much to do with their impact as a new literary form in his time, when a concept of fictitiousness as needed for a proper understanding of such realistic writings was not yet well developed.
