Description
Hydroxybenzophenone group (Hbp)-immobilized silica gel-fillers (1) acting as UV-absorber were prepared. Surface tensions (γ) of 1 were measured by the wicking method. The interfacial adhesion energy (W) of the composites (l/PS) between 1 and the polystyrene (PS) was calculated using the dispersive component (γ^D) and the polar component (γ^P) of γ according to the equation described below where subscripts m and f mean matrix and filler, respectively. The W values of the l/PS composites were considerably smaller than those of the parent SiO_2/PS composite. A good correlation between W and glass transition temperature (T_g) showed that an introduction of Hbp groups on SiO_2 was effective for enhancement of adhesion between the 1 and matrix polymer. W=2√<γ^D_f・γ^D_m>+2√<γ^P_f・γ^P_m>
