説明
Hermann Lautensach (1886-1971) is one of the most leading geographers who contributed to the development of regional geography in Germany. He is famous not only for his studies on the Iberian Peninsula as well as on the Korean Peninsula, but also for his theory of “Formenwandel”. His idea of “Länderkundlicher Formenwandel” conceived in the earlier stage of the development of his thought is different from his concept of “Geographischer Formenwandel” developed in the later stage. He carried out the field studies on the Iberian Peninsula in the latter half of the 1920's and from then developed the theory of “Formenwandel”. The results of these field studies were published as his “Habilitationsschrift” titled “Morphologische Skizze der Küsten Portugals”, in 1928 and also as a series of regional geographical works on the Iberian Peninsula in the 1930's based on the theory of “Landerkundlicher Formenwandel”. “Formenwandel” means the areal variations of geographical phenomena and his “Länderkundlicher Formenwandel” resulted from the generalization of the characteristics of areas. In 1945 he also published a work on the Korean Peninsula based on this theory of “Landerkundlicher Formenwandel”. He did not expound his theory of “Geographischer Formenwandel” until 1951. In this theory, he named four categories of the areal variations of the surface of the earth as follows : 1. planetarischer Wandel, 2. west-östlicher Wandel, 3. peripher-zentraler Wandel, and 4. hypsometrischer Wandel. In his view, the earth's surface can be classified into some “Landschaften”, based on the above four categories of “Geographischer Formenwandel”. So “Landschaft” is a generic region. In geography only such typified regions are able to be compared with each other. A comparative approach is effective to regional geography. Therefore, the region dealt with in regional geography must be not only “Land” or “Raumindividuum” but also “Landschaft” or “Raumtyp”, considering comparative regional geography. Lautensach reached the conclusion that regional geography, the center of geography, should be based upon his theory of “Geographischer Formenwandel”. This idea was finally given concrete expression in his work on the Iberian Penininsula published in 1964.
